Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026. It says the platform will be wound down if its sale, which it expects to finish by the end of November or early December 2026, brings no offer that keeps it running (Character.AI's announcement). Its export can take 3 to 4 weeks, so request yours now. You can follow the site on our Character.AI status page.
The viewer also reads chat files saved by other tools, as JSON or Tavern-style JSON Lines, and it can hand any character to our character importer so you can keep chatting with her here.
How to read your Character.AI export
- 1Request your exportOn character.ai, go to Profile > Profile Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Export Data. In the app: Profile > Settings > Legal & Privacy > Export Data.
- 2Download it within 7 daysCharacter.AI emails you a link when the export is ready, which it says can take 3 to 4 weeks. The link works for 7 days (Character.AI help).
- 3Open it herePick the .zip, or the .json files inside it. The viewer unzips and reads it in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
- 4Read, save or bring her overSearch your chats, save any chat as a text file, or send a character to the importer to keep chatting on Naughty Chats.
What's in a Character.AI data export?
Character.AI doesn't publish the format of its export. Its help center, checked on October 18, 2026, only says how to request one, that it can take 3 to 4 weeks, and that the download link lasts 7 days (Character.AI help).
So the viewer doesn't depend on exact file names. It looks through every JSON file for conversations (messages with a speaker and text) and characters (a name with a greeting, definition or description). It knows the field names Character.AI's own chat data uses, old and new, plus common chat-export formats.
If a file doesn't open, the viewer shows which fields it found instead of failing silently, so you can tell us and we can add support.
Is it safe to open my Character.AI export here?
Yes. Your export holds private conversations, so the viewer never uploads it. It reads the file with your browser's own tools, and your chats and characters aren't sent to Naughty Chats or anyone else. Close the tab and they're gone from the page.

How to save your Character.AI chats before it shuts down
Nobody knows yet whether Character.AI will survive its sale. These steps keep your stories safe either way:
- Request the official export today. It's Character.AI's own copy of your data, and it can take weeks to arrive.
- Save your favorite chats as text files from the viewer, and keep them somewhere you back up.
- For characters you made, also copy each definition from Character.AI's character editor. It's quick, and it's the heart of the character.
- Bring her to Naughty Chats with the character importer and keep the story going.

For a character you only chatted with, the viewer rebuilds her from the chat: her greeting and a sample of how she talks.
