Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet, but it could. On October 12, 2026, Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to sell the company in a court-supervised process. It says the platform stays up and paid subscriptions stay active during the sale, which it expects to finish by the end of November or early December 2026 (Character.AI's announcement).

Character.AI says it hopes the sale brings an offer that keeps the platform running. If no such offer comes, the platform will be wound down. Disney is the first bidder, offering $20 million for a non-exclusive license to some of Character.AI's technology, and other buyers can still bid (TechCrunch).

What it means for you: everything still works for now, but nothing guarantees your chats will outlast the sale. Save what matters to you now. (Facts as of October 18, 2026.)

How to save your Character.AI chats

Character.AI's own export emails you a copy of your account data. It can take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive, so ask for it today (Character.AI help).

  1. 1On the web: open your Profile, then Profile Settings > Account > Manage Account & Data > Export Data.
  2. 2In the app: open your Profile, tap the Settings icon, then Legal & Privacy > Export Data.
  3. 3When the email arrives, download the file right away. Character.AI says the link works for 7 days.
  4. 4Open the file in our free Character.AI export viewer to read your chats. It runs in your browser, so your file never leaves your device.

How to save your characters

The export is slow, but you can save a character yourself in a minute:

  • Characters you made: open the character's edit page and copy the name, greeting, description and definition into a document.
  • Characters made by others: copy the name, greeting and description, plus a few lines from your chats that show how she talks. You can see the definition only if the creator left it visible (Character.AI's guide).

Is Character.AI safe?

As of October 18, 2026: Character.AI no longer lets users under 18 use open-ended chat, and it checks ages with its own model plus outside tools such as Persona (details). Its terms ban pornographic content (source). Character creators can't see your chats with their characters (source), but Character.AI keeps some of what you share to train and improve its AI models, and only users in the EEA and UK can opt out (source). It says your data stays covered by its privacy policy during the sale.

How do I cancel c.ai+?

If you subscribed on the website, go to Settings > Account > Manage, enter your account email, and open the customer portal from the link Character.AI emails you; you can cancel there. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions (Character.AI help). Character.AI says subscriptions stay active, and billing is unchanged for now, during the sale.
