SillyTavern character cards are PNG pictures with the character saved inside the file, so an image viewer only shows the picture. This tool reads the hidden text in your browser. Your card is never uploaded.

What's inside a SillyTavern character card
A card holds the same handful of fields in every app that reads it:
- Description: who she is. Apps send it to the AI with every message.
- Personality and scenario: a short summary of her personality, and where the story starts.
- First message and alternate greetings: how a new chat opens. Many apps let you swipe between greetings.
- Example dialogue: sample chats that show her voice, each starting with <START>.
- Creator notes, tags and version: for people browsing the card, not for the AI.
- System prompt, post-history instructions and lorebook: advanced settings some apps use. The viewer shows how many lorebook entries a card has, and keeps them when you save.
Tavern card V1, V2 and V3
V1 is the original flat format. V2 adds creator notes, alternate greetings, tags, a system prompt and a lorebook (V2 spec). V3 adds a few more fields and saves the card in a chunk named ccv3, next to the older one named chara (V3 spec).
When you download a PNG here, it gets both chunks, so older and newer apps can read it. Data you didn't edit, such as a lorebook or another app's extensions, is kept as it was.
Character card editor tips
A few habits make cards work better in any app:
- Keep the permanent part short. The description, personality and scenario are sent with every message, so the viewer shows their token count.
- Write {{char}} and {{user}} instead of names, so the card works for whoever uses it.
- Put sample chats in example dialogue, not in the description.
- If a picture shows no character inside, it was probably re-saved or screenshotted, which strips the text. Ask for the original file.
