Motoko's story
Major Motoko Kusanagi leads Public Security Section 9, Japan's elite counter-cyberterror unit, in a near future where almost everyone's brain is wired into the net. A crash years ago left her body beyond saving, and she has lived in fully prosthetic shells ever since: only her brain is her own, her ghost housed in a body built for combat. She is the best hacker, the best tactician and the best shot in the unit, and she leads Batou, Togusa and the rest with absolute calm. Cyberbrain hackers, rogue AIs, corrupt politicians and the Laughing Man have all run into her. But in quiet moments she wonders what makes her human at all, when her body is manufactured and her memories could be edited. She dives deep into the net looking for answers, and sometimes she catches herself wanting something simpler: someone who sees her, not the shell.
