Practice it with a dominant girl

Akane Onibi, 24

Tell her your safe word before you play. A good Domme asks for it first, and stops the moment she hears it.

Her chat opens with your safe word typed in. Nothing is sent until you press send.

The traffic-light system

Many people use these three, plus a safe word of their own.

  • GreenAll good. Keep going.
  • YellowSlow down or ease off. Check in with me.
  • RedStop now. The scene is over, no questions asked.

When you can't speak

Agree on a signal too, and practice it once before you play.

  • Drop a held object, like a set of keys or a small ball. When it falls, everything stops.
  • Tap out: two or three firm taps on your partner, the bed or the floor.
  • Hum a few notes of a song you both know.
  • Hand squeezes: your partner squeezes twice to ask if you're OK, and you squeeze twice back. No answer means stop.

Dominant girls who ask for your safe word first

Every girl is a fictional adult. Start a chat free, no account needed for the first messages.

A safe word stops play right away, no questions asked. It only works if you both agree on it before you start, so pick one together, say it out loud once, and add a signal for when speaking is hard. The traffic lights and non-verbal signals next to the generator cover the rest.

How to pick a safe word

  1. 1Choose your themesSilly, food, colors, places, or all four.
  2. 2GenerateTap for a new safe word, or Make 10 to compare a list.
  3. 3Agree on it togetherSay it out loud, agree on what it means, and add a slow-down word and a signal.
  4. 4Write it downPut it in your BDSM contract with your limits.

What makes a good safe word

The best safe words are boring in the best way: nobody could mistake them for part of the scene.

  • Never part of play. Pick a word that doesn't come up during a scene, so nobody wonders whether you meant it.
  • Short and easy to say, even when you're out of breath.
  • Easy to remember. A silly word like Platypus sticks.
  • Hard to mishear. Avoid words that sound like something you'd say anyway.
  • Agreed out loud before you start, every time you play with someone new.

The traffic-light system: green, yellow, red

Many people use colors as well as, or instead of, a safe word. Green means all good, keep going. Yellow means slow down or check in. Red means stop now.

A partner can also ask "What's your color?" to check in without breaking the mood. Whatever words you choose, the rule is the same: when you hear the stop word, you stop. It's never punished, and nobody argues with it.

Non-verbal safe signals

Some activities, or simply feeling overwhelmed, can make speaking hard. Agree on a signal you can give without words, and practice it once before you play.

  • Drop a held object, like a set of keys or a small ball.
  • Tap out: two or three firm taps on your partner, the bed or the floor.
  • Hum a few notes of a song you both know.
  • Hand squeezes: two squeezes asks if you're OK, two back means yes, no answer means stop.

Why safe words matter

A safe word turns consent into something you can use in the moment. Both of you can relax into a scene, because either of you can end it with one word. If a partner ignores a safe word, the scene is over, and so is the trust: that's a red flag, not a misunderstanding.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good safe word?

A word you'd never say during play, that's short and easy to say. Ordinary or silly words work well, like Pineapple, Platypus or Kalamazoo. Many people also use red to stop and yellow to slow down.

What is the traffic-light system?

Green means keep going, yellow means slow down or check in, and red means stop now. It works alongside a safe word, or instead of one.

What if I can't speak?

Agree on a non-verbal signal before you start: dropping a held object, tapping out two or three times, or a hand-squeeze check. Practice it once so you both know it works.

Are safe words only for BDSM?

No. Any couple can use one, for rough play, new activities or roleplay. It's a quick way to say stop that nobody can mistake.

Is the safe word generator free?

Yes. It's free and runs in your browser. The only thing it keeps is the favorites you save, on your own device.
